Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Dashboard Warning Lights
Understanding the various warning lights on the dashboard of your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van is essential for safe and smooth driving. Deciphering the meaning behind each warning light prepares you for confidently tackling any potential road issues head-on.
Hazard Warning Light
A general warning light that will accompany another light.
Coolant Temperature
Indicates that the coolant temperature is too high.
Coolant Level
Low coolant level detected, which could lead to overheating. In this case, stop immediately, allow the engine to cool down, and add coolant.
Airbag
Detects a fault in the airbag system. Potential causes include: Disrupted connectors under the seats, airbag sensor, seat occupancy sensor, or an object in the belt buckle.
Impaired Brake
Linked to low brake fluid levels, EBD malfunction, or issues with the trailer brake force booster.
Engine Oil Level
Signals low engine oil level, excessive level, display malfunction, or oil level sensor failure.
Check Engine
Numerous potential issues may trigger this warning. Common reasons include: Low fuel level, injection control malfunction, exhaust gas after-treatment malfunction, or a faulty oxygen air intake sensor.
Glow Plugs
Activates upon turning the ignition key to position 2, with the plug light staying on for about a minute. If the warning light remains on for approximately one minute while the engine is running, it signals an issue. In colder conditions, starting the engine might be difficult. Immediate servicing is advised.
Tire Pressure
Either appears or continues flashing for 60 seconds. If it flashes constantly, it indicates that the tire pressure monitoring system has detected a rapid loss of pressure in one tire.
ABS
If activated while the engine is running, it suggests a malfunction or temporary unavailability of the anti-lock braking system. This means ESP®, ASR, and BAS®, along with cruise control, will also be unavailable. This increases the risk of wheel lock during heavy braking, and steering functionality will be significantly compromised.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Activates while the engine is running if there’s a malfunction in the exhaust gas after-treatment system or if the level of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is low, contaminated, or diluted.
Distance Warning
Stays on consecutively if a fault has been detected in the system. Bad weather could cause this signal to activate.
Lane-Keeping
Helps alert the driver that they have changed lanes without using their indicators.
Brake Pad/Lining
Appears after the engine has started, or while the vehicle is in full motion, to signal brake pads have reached their limit. Be sure to change your brake pads as soon as possible.
ASR/BRS
ASR (Acceleration Skid Control) and BAS® (Electronic Braking Assist) lights come on either constantly or flash for two potential reasons: If constantly on, ASR has been disabled due to a malfunction. If flashing, one or more tires have reached the limit of grip.
ESP®
If this warning signal is constantly on, then the Electronic Stability Program has been deactivated.
Air Filter
Indicates that the air filter has been contaminated. You should change the air filter as soon as possible.
Water in Fuel
Indicates that water has collected in the water separator in the fuel filter and has reached the maximum level. Requires draining.
Low Battery Charge
If the red battery light remains on or turns on while driving, it indicates a fault in the battery, alternator, or a torn poly V belt.
Parking Brake
Signals that brakes are impaired due to wet roads or dirt-covered surfaces, which causes corrosion and reduced braking force.
Bulb
Signals in yellow when the key is turned to position 2 in the ignition lock or one of the exterior lighting bulbs isn’t working.
